When Nebraska state lawmakers applied for to become the 37th state in the mid-19th century, they recognized that their state would remain largely rural and less populated than other states, so they made the decision to have one of the best of everything, including the country’s only unicameral (one body) legislative system and single state university system (with one of the country’s best football teams). Interestingly, Kool-Aid was invented in Nebraska and remains the state’s official drink today. One of the 93 counties in Nebraska is Gage which is described below.

Information about Gage County

Located in the far southeast corner of Nebraska, Gage County was named for a Methodist minister who served as the state legislature’s chaplain at the time the county was established in 1855. The county seat of Gage County is Beatrice (home to Beatrice Foods) which is also the county’s largest municipality with a population of about 12,893 people, accounting for more than half of the county’s total population of nearly 23,000 residents (almost all white) comprising around 9,300 households and just over 10,000 housing units. The median household annual income level in Gage County was almost $35,000 compared to the national median level of $51,939.

Role of the Gage County Assessor

Similar to those in the country’s other 3,007 counties, the primary role of the Gage County Assessor is to provide the county’s taxpayers with timely tax assessments that are accurate and fairly calculated pursuant to relevant state regulations and statutes. To this end, the Gage County Assessor’s Office is tasked with identifying, listing and establishing current values for all real property located within the county, including property used for residential, commercial or industrial as well as agricultural or horticultural industries. In addition, the Gage County’s Assessor’s Office is responsible for administering applications for homestead exemptions, applications for tax exempt status from non-profit and other governmental organizations and personal property tax returns.

Unlike many other countries, however, the Gage County Assessor is an elected position for 4 years. Successful candidates for the position must possess an assessor’s certified from the Nebraska Property Tax Administrator that verifies completion their educational and experiential qualifications and all county assessors are required to complete ongoing continuing educational requirements in order to maintain their certification.
