About Clark County

If you live in the United States, the chances are good you have already visited Clark County, perhaps without even knowing it. In fact, nearly 43 million people visit Clark County’s Las Vegas, the county seat, contributing $35.5 billion to the local economies each year – and these numbers continue to increase significantly year to year.

Likewise, the population of Clark County continues to increase. The 2010 U.S. census placed the population of Clark County at about 1.95 million people, and this figure grew to 2.23 million by 2018, making it the most populous county in the state by far. Indeed, nearly 75 percent of Nevada’s population lives in Clark County, and it is among the nation’s fastest growing regions. In addition, Clark County is also large in terms of square miles, with a total of 8,061 square miles (20,880 square kilometers). Of this total square mileage, land accounts for 7,891 square miles (20,440 square kilometers) and 169 square miles (440 square kilometers), or 97.9 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively.

As shown in the map below, Clark County is situated in the south eastern tip of Nevada.

Not surprisingly, there are plenty of things to see and do in Clark County besides gambling at world class casinos and enjoyed headliner entertainment acts. For instance, Clark County contains 20 official wilderness areas that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System as well as dozens and dozens of family-oriented activities, including the Adventuredome Theme Park, the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, gondolas rides at the Venetian Casino, the Eiffel Tower Experience, Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. (Scientific Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network) and, of course, the High Roller Observation Wheel.

In addition, Clark County is also large in terms of public sector employment, with more than 10,000 staff members serving in 38 different county departments. The county has a fiscal year general fund budget of $1.57 billion as well as a total budget of $6.85 billion, and it enjoys the highest bond ratings of any local government in the state with a “triple A” rating from Moody’s Investors Service and an “AA+” rating from Standard & Poor’s.

Helping to keep everything in Clark County running smoothly is the Clark County Assessor’s whose role is described below.

Role of Clark County Assessor

The role of the Clark County Assessor includes performing accurate and equitable assessments of all property located in the county. The current county assessor, Ms. Briana Johnson, was elected to this office on November 6, 2018, and prior to that, she served in the county assessor’s office for more than 20 years, beginning in 1995 in the Assessor’s Appraisal Division, including Manager of Property Appraisal, prior to her promotion to Assistant Director of Assessment Services in 2016.

Ms. Johnson brings this impressive wealth of expertise and experience to bear on the Clark County Assessor’s office today, and it shows.  The county assessor’s office maintains a sophisticated Web site that features a number of useful functions for Clark County residents and business owners, including searchable portals for up to date secured and unsecured tax rolls, an archive of Clark County statistics and reports dating to August 2013, downloadable forms (in PDF format) for the routine forms needed for transactions with the county assessor’s office, and even a video library that explains the role of the Clark County Assessor as well as providing information and tips to users concerning property exemptions and more.

Other services provided by the Clark County Assessor’s office include a Road Document Listing which has information concerning roads and right-of-way parcels in the county, as well as a GIS mapping service. Furthermore, the county assessor provides residents and business owners with information concerning tax abatement regulations and homestead laws on its Web site.

Finally, although the Clark County Assessor’s office does not set tax rates, it does provide a link to the Clark County Treasurer’s office that features tax rates the 111 separate tax districts that are currently in Clark County. Because the tax rate is based on the amount of monies that are budgeted for the various services provided by the county government (i.e., schools, police, fire, parks, libraries, and capital projects, such as flood control and transportation), these rates differ across the county.

Conclusion

Many county assessors would likely envy Ms. Briana Johnson in her capacity as Clark County Assessor since her main office is located in the hottest entertainment destination in the country, but they also likely envy her office’s state of the art administration and use of innovative technologies to facilitate the delivery of a wide array of services to taxpayers in Clark County. In sum, Clark County residents and business owners were farsighted when they elected Ms. Johnson to her current position as Clark County Assessor.
